The Nelson Mandela Museum was opened in 2000 as a non-profit government project. It is currently divided into two main sites: the Bhunga Building in Mthatha, and the Youth & Heritage Centre in the village of Qunu, where Nelson Mandela’s spent his childhood years. The Bhunga Building features regular temporary exhibitions documenting Mandela's life and vision, while the museum in Qunu hosts exhibitions, tours and offers accommodation and conference facilities. Mandela himself described the museum as 'part of a portfolio of legacy projects that seek to transform the heritage landscape from our apartheid past. At the same time, it is a resource for promoting economic development throughout tourism in an impoverished region of the country.'
