Puketi Kauri forests contains an abundance of life including other large trees like Taraire, Kohekohe, Towai and Northern Rata. The forest is also vitally important in protecting threatened wildlife such as Kokako, North Island Brown Kiwi, Kukupa (NZ pigeon), and the more common Fantail, Pied Tit, Tui, Grey Warbler, Shining Cuckoo, and Kingfisher. Another distinctive creature is New Zealand's unique and often-said "handsome" Kauri snail, a carnivore that feeds mainly on earthworms, slugs and soft-bodied insects.
