Located in the remote border region where Namibia meets Angola, the Ruacana Falls are a highly worthwhile northern stopover. Plunging 120 metres into a basin, they are among the largest and widest waterfalls on the continent and a striking sight to behold. The falls are particularly spectacular in April and May after the rainy season when they are at their most powerful, and their sheer beauty comparable to that of the legendary Victoria Falls. A visit to this area gives travellers a good chance of encountering the tribal Himba people, who live a semi-nomadic existence according to their culturally rich traditions.
