Behind the thousand-metre Table Mountain is a series of peaks known as the Twelve Apostles. Arguably more photogenic that its flat-topped sibling, the Apostles chain provides shelter for stray clouds, its gullies sustain an evergreen sheen of life and the whole lot looks out over the azure sea and pure white sands of Camps Bay, Clifton and Llandudno. A Big Sur road winds along the coast circumventing the entire peninsula with a view at every corner.

On the other side of the mountain are the city and the harbour, bristling with semi-busy Capetonians in glamorous repose at strategically-placed streetside cafés.

Further south along the Cape Peninsula you will find some of South Africa's oldest wine farms in scenic vales at the foot of these ever-present mountains; beyond that: more beaches, mountains, forests, nature reserves and a daisy-chain of charming seaside towns.
