This full day excursion covers the burgeoning art scene in Johannesburg as well as a visit to the lesser-known Township of Alexandra (Alex), with a focus on art and community upliftment.

Johannesburg is at the forefront of South Africa's art scene, no where more so than the Keyes Art Mile Precinct in Rosebank. Not only an assembly of world-class galleries, but it also offers restaurants, fashion and a hub to connect people. If time allows, visit Constitutional Hill for a fascinating insight into the historic and political landscape of South Africa.

For lunch we recommend one of the many hip restaurants in the the downtown Newtown District. On Saturdays, it is worth a visit to The Neighbourgood's Food Market.

An area of just 6.9km2 with an estimated population of 180 000, Alex assaults the senses. Its narrow streets pulse with life and colour, and although it is a fraction of Soweto’s size, Alex’s character easily makes up for what it lacks in scale. We’ve heard people from Soweto joke that Alex is the place Sowetans go to for a ‘real’ township experience. Located just 6km from Sandton and linked by the Malboro Gautrain, Alex is slowly waking up to its potential as a tourist attraction offering lots of history (Nelson Mandela lived here when he first came to Johannesburg) and a unique culture. Visit a local art entrepreneur, engage community leaders and kids at an after school sports centre and visit the home of a resident art collector.
