The Caño Negro wildlife refuge and Rio Frio Wetlands are ones of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Costa Rica, serving as sanctuary of a wide variety of Flora and Fauna. This area has been also internationally recognized as protected wetlands under the United Nations Ramsar convention.
Early morning a bus will pick you at your hotel where you will travel for hour and a half through the Northern plains until you reach Los Chiles, a small village located only 4 km away from the Nicaraguan border. At Los Chiles local dock, you will board a touristic boat that will take you around the Rio Frio (Cool River) where you will enjoy a peaceful floating safari through the rain forest.
The time on the boat will vary according to water levels - usually it is between two hours and two hours and half, during this time the professional tour guide will give you entertaining and quite interesting information about the natural history of this dynamic and intense place.
Caño Negro forms mostly in the rainy season and during the dry season it is reduced to little lagoons, channels and grasslands which provide perfect conditions to host thousands of migratory and endemic birds, including wood storks, spoonbills, ibis, anhingas, ducks, herons, cormorants and the Jabirú (the largest bird in Central America and currently an endangered species).
The Rio Frio riverbanks provide shelter for various endangered species including the ancient garfish, cougars, jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, peccary and several species of monkey – capuchin, mantled howler and Geoffroy’s spider monkey, as well as the Three-Toed sloths and reptiles like caimans, Jesus Christ lizards and turtles.
As you finish the boat ride to the most remarkable wildlife refuge in Costa Rica, you will be welcome to enjoy a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch, before driving back to your hotel.
