Inaugurated in 1875, the Palais Garnier is located in the heart of Paris and was built for the Paris Opera at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III. The exterior facade is elaborate featuring gilded figural groups, gilded bronze busts and massive pillars. The interior consists of interweaving corridors, stairwells, alcoves and landings, allowing the movement of large numbers of people and space for socialising during intermission. Rich with velvet, gold leaf, and cherubim and nymphs, the highlight is the Grand Staircase. The theatre has been a Monument Historique of France since 1923.
