The Bo-Kaap (“bo” is the Afrikaans expression for “up’), also called the Cape Malay Quarter, is located on the lower slopes of Signal Hill in Cape Town. Until today the community consists mainly of Malays, the descendants of slaves who were brought from the East Indies during the second half of the 17th century. They have preserved their Islamic traditions: there are a number of small mosques in the area, and the muezzin’s call to prayer is heard five times a day. The area is known and visited for its picturesque flat-roofed, two-storey houses, most of them colour washed in a wide variety of colours. There are also a number of fine traditional restaurants to be discovered by the more intrepid explorer.
