Located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Las Pumas Rescue Center began when the deforestation of Guanacaste was at its peak. In 1959 Don Werner Hagnauer began working in Hacienda La Pacifica. His wife Mrs Lilly Bodmer de Hagnauer began to receive animals brought by people from the area, officials of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and in some instances buying the wild animals to save their lives and give them proper care. In 1985, the couple decided to sell La Hacienda and maintain an area of approximately 25 hectares, and in 1989 they founded what is now known as the Las Pumas Rescue Center. The centre now houses many different species of feline, deer, primates, and mustelids. The centre is one of the last remaining of its kind in the country, and visitors are invited to visit the animals. A gift shop is available on-site, as well as picnic tables for guests to take lunch.
