Situated south of the Nile Delta, the city of Memphis once served as the capital of Aneb-Hetch in ancient Egypt. Memphis enjoyed significant status throughout ancient Mediterranean history and was a thriving metropolis by the time of Egypt’s third dynasty. Once an important religious centre, Memphis was left to ruin after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 640 AD. Tourists can explore the various ruins scattered around the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Memphis archaeological zone, including those of the royal palaces, an extensive necropolis and the great temple of Ptah. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Giza necropolis as well as the ancient Saqqara necropolis.
