Maromizaha Reserve
"Safeguarding the Maromizaha rainforest for future generations".
The Maromizaha or "dragon tree forest" is a dense, evergreen, medium-altitude rainforest covering an area of 1880 ha, formed by a series of hills separated by narrow valleys. Located 150km east of Antananarivo, it is home to a biodiversity typical of eastern Madagascar.
Over thirty species of mammals are recorded, including 14 species of Afrosoricida, 8 species of Rodentia, 1 species of Soricomorpha, 3 species of Carnivora, 3 species of chiroptera and 12 species of lemur.
Around 80 bird species live in forest habitats. However, bird species frequenting open, wet areas (streams, swamps) can be observed here. No lake bird species are found in Maromizaha.
For flora and vegetation, the Maromizaha dense rainforest belonging to the Weinmannia and Tambourissa series is relatively rich in flora. Partial research into the vegetation of Maromizaha has identified more than 80 plant families, 210 genera and 430 species.
