Dubbed New Zealand’s ‘Heart of Gold’, Waihi has a rich historical heritage by virtue of its century-long gold-mining past. This was centred on the famous Martha Mine, which is considered one of the globe’s most significant gold and silver mines of all time, and is still operational today. The Martha Mine Pit Rim Walk allows visitors a glimpse into the workings of the gold-mining industry, while the modern Gold Discovery Centre provides a host of interactive activities, simulated mining experiences and 3D theatre. Not to be missed is an outing to gorgeous Karangahake Gorge, with its amazing scenery, network of hiking and biking trails, and historical mining buildings, tunnels and railway track. Just a short drive from Waihi is the resort town of Waihi Beach on the western shores of the Bay of Plenty, where travellers can enjoy sun-bathing, swimming and surfing.
