Dating back to the 13th century, Kilkenny Castle was built as a guarding-point of the River Nore as well as the junction of several routeways. A symbol of Norman occupation, the castle was an important part of the defence of the town and was built in a square shape, with four large circular look-out towers on the corners, as well as a massive ditch. In 1391, the castle was bought by the Butler family; all Earls, Marquesses, and Dukes of Ormonde. In 1967 the castle was given to the Nation and is currently managed by the Office of Public Works. The castle currently houses an art gallery as well as a playground, and the grounds, as well as the castle, are open to the public.
