This area is crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn and is mostly flat, although some picturesque canyons and elevations can be found in certain parts, such as the Moon Valley system. While most of the ground is rocky, occasional sand dunes can still be found in this region; for example, sand dunes cover a significant portion of the coastline between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

The Moon Landscape can be reached via a scenic drive through the Namib-Naukluft Park. This eerie and mysterious terrain was created by years of erosion of soft soil layers that were deposited in this area more than 450 million years ago.
