The laid-back agricultural village of San Juan La Laguna lies roughly two kilometres from San Pedro, on the southern shore of Lake Atitlan in Solola, Guatemala. The community, a population of 95% Tz’utujil, has formed cooperatives of organic farmers, coffee growers and natural dyers, and take great pride in their traditional crafts, most notably painting and weaving. The town offers stunning views of the vast azure lake surrounded by lush and colourful gardens, and there are some excellent hikes to enjoy. The Rostro Maya National Park provides an excellent three-hour loop trip, or a shorter and easier version - from Santa Clara la Laguna to Rostro Maya. Make sure to try the mouth-watering local tomato salsa - ‘patin’ - served in a banana leaf with fish or chicken.
