Morocco’s Atlas Mountains are the highest in North Africa and a prime place for trekking, offering an array of routes of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. They are separated into three sections – the Western High Atlas, Central High Atlas and Eastern High Atlas – with the loftiest peak, Jebel (Mount) Toubkal, located in the Western High Atlas National Park and standing at 4167 metres. If you’re not keen on hiking, horse and donkey rides can be organised as an alternative. It is also possible to stay overnight in some of the indigenous Berber villages dotted across the region, an experience that allows tourists a fascinating glimpse into the local culture.
