The Zafimaniry country is in central highlands of Madagascar. The Zafimaniry people are famous for the Wood-crafting knowledge added in 2003 to UNESCO's list of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage. You can visit the workshops in Ambositra, the largest town in the area directly on National Road 7. You can shop board games, jewelry boxes & statues among other wood-carved objects.
For traveler wanting to know further, Antoetra is the first village where homes are build according to this art (1h30 drive from Ambositra). But for an even more genuine experience, you will have to walk into the distant country of Zafimaniry. At least 1 day is needed to reach Ifasina (7km walk from Antoetra), the preserved Zafimaniry capital. To have a full overview of the Zafimaniry country, you can trek for 3 days and camp for 2 nights walking up and down the hills.
