El Misti Volcano is located just outside Arequipa, Peru. Due to its symmetrical conical shape, and imposing and challenging elevation, El Misti is the best-known volcano in Peru. El Misti is approximately 112,000 years old. It is a stratovolcano formed by the successive accumulation of lava flows and pyroclastic sequences. Daily, between 40 and 60 earthquakes occur that are imperceptible to the population of Arequipa but are monitored in real-time through a geophysical network of 6 seismometers, 1 GPS station and two scientific cameras.
