Built between 1598 and 1629, Naqsh-e Jahan Square is a public urban square situated in the centre of Isfahan, Iran. Buildings from the Safavid era encircle this 160 meters-wide and 560 meters-long square. It is one of the largest squares in the world and is filled with fountains, green lawns, souvenir shops and ice-cream places. There are also horse-drawn carriages, electric carts and Shank's pony that will transport visitors around the square. Visitors to the square can also see the Imam Mosque, the Ali Qapu, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque and the Qeysarie Gate that opens into the Isfahan Grand Bazaar. The square is an outstanding example of Iranian and Islamic architecture and is best seen in the late afternoon when the blue-tiled mosaics and mosque domes are lit up by the last rays of the sun.
