Located in the heart of Newtown, Johannesburg, Mary Fitzgerald Square serves as a cultural hub with a rich history and modern amenities. Originally a wagon site and meeting ground for miners’ strikes in the early 20th century, it was renamed in 1939 to honour Mary Fitzgerald, South Africa’s first female trade unionist. The square spans a vast area, accommodating up to 50,000 people, and is designed for diverse events such as concerts, markets, and outdoor film festivals. A standout feature is the 55-square-metre LED screen, the largest of its kind in Africa, used for public broadcasts and performances. Artistic elements include heads carved from old railway sleepers by local artists and two sky disks, lit with fibre optics, representing significant dates in South Africa’s history. Nearby attractions include the Jazz Walk of Fame and a bronze sculpture of Brenda Fassie outside the Bassline music venue. Thoughtfully designed lighting adds a vibrant night-time ambience.
