Situated less than an hour away from Senegal's capital Dakar lies Lake Retba, an extraordinary coral pink lake that nests between the white sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man-made lake is known to be a source of livelihood for thousands of people from Senegal and West Africa, who come to harvest salt due to the three square kilometre area producing an amount similar to that of the Dead Sea. It is said that the water turns the pink coral colour in the sun due to a salt-loving micro-algae which produces a red coloured pigment.
