Resting off the coast of Dakar in Senegal, the tiny UNESCO-listed Ile De Goree is famous for its picturesque scenery, its important history, and its unique atmosphere. The colourful island is surrounded by clear turquoise waters, and its shores are lined with pretty beaches interspersed with harbours filled with bobbing fishing boats, creating idyllic, photogenic scenes. The island played a large role in the Atlantic slave trade, and now uses this history to create awareness and education with cultural tours and a museum. Ile de Goree is also home to several other historic centres, such as the IFAN Historical Museum which provides insight into the island’s (and region’s) heritage dating back to the 5th century. With no tarred roads, the island breathes a meditative quality, enriched by the abundance of active artists living there and a number of lovely art studios.
