The extraordinary nature of Flinders Chase National Park, set on the western side of South Australia’s famous Kangaroo Island, has created an iconic protected area. The park presents a mecca for hikers with its breathtaking trails, which wind through thick woodlands and along the dramatic coastline where boardwalks fringe the curious Remarkable Rocks (make sure to also visit the striking Admiral’s Arch). Animal lovers will be pleased to spot long-nosed fur seals, echidnas, platypuses, shy koalas (with some luck), and whales frolicking close by. Activities on offer in Flinders Chase National Park include birdwatching, camping, swimming, and snorkelling. History enthusiasts should pop into the Cape Bourda lighthouse, built in 1858, with its interesting museum featuring artefacts from numerous shipwrecks.
