Just as London has Oxford Street and New York has Fifth Avenue, the Kurfürstendamm Berlin is a 3.5 kilometre stretch of shops, restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. The area was built as a German alternative to the Champs Elysees in Paris, with ornate buildings lined with trees, creating a mythical but charming replica. Much of the original buildings were destroyed in the war, but some of the original buildings of the rich and famous in Berlin remain. It is a popular tourist destination and attracts millions of visitors per year with huge department stores and shops such as Chanel, Gucci, and Rolex, lining the streets.
