As we pass by the Drakenstein Correctional Centre—formerly known as Victor Verster Prison—we glimpse one of South Africa’s most historically significant sites. Nestled between Paarl and Franschhoek, this low-security facility is where Nelson Mandela spent the final 14 months of his 27-year imprisonment, living in a private house within the complex. It was from these gates on February 11, 1990, that Mandela walked to freedom, raising his fist in triumph—a moment that signaled the beginning of a new era for South Africa. Outside the prison stands a powerful statue of Mandela, capturing that exact moment of his release.
