Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula in the south eastern section of the state of Yucatan, the small colonial city of Valladolid is one of Mexico's ‘magical towns’ - a label assigned to towns featuring natural beauty, cultural riches or remarkable historical significance. The narrow cobblestone streets of this charming little town are lined with gorgeous pastel coloured low-rise buildings and several interesting visitor attractions. These include, among others: the Bernardino de Siena, a 15th-century ex-convent and church set in a beautiful park; a lovely town square, surrounded by pretty colonial-style buildings; and the Museo de San Roque, showcasing an array of fascinating Mayan and colonial artefacts. Valladolid also serves as an excellent base for exploring a number of nearby Mayan ruins and cenotes such as Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, Coba, Cenotes Xkeken and Samula.
