Celestun is a tranquil fishing village in the northwest corner of the Mexican state of Yucatán. The town boasts an idyllic coastal setting, and its exquisite beaches are lined with charming palapas (thatched-roof restaurants), offering an extraordinary variety of sumptuous seafood dishes. Celestun is best known for its primary tourist attraction, Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Celestun, a large coastal wetland reserve and wildlife refuge. The reserve offers a sanctuary to over 200 distinct bird species, including vast flocks of flamingos, herons and pelicans. The area also provides a hatching ground for endangered sea turtles. For those interested in history and culture, the gorgeous abandoned historic Hacienda and wonderful 19th Century lighthouse are well worth visiting. Celestun is a delight to see at any time of year but, if possible, try to visit during Mexico’s ‘Holy Week’ when local Maya villagers flock to Celestun to celebrate the town’s patron saint and to join in the lively festivities.
