After a trip introduction and briefing, visitors are shuttled out to Khayelitsha Township on the outskirts of Cape Town. With an estimated 1.5 million inhabitants, Khayelitsha is one of South Africa's largest townships and means 'New Home' in the Xhosa language. The tour begins at the Velokhaya BMX Oval and Life Cycling Academy which gives children from the community a chance to be engaged after school hours. After a quick introduction to the Velokhaya project and a chance to cycle the BMX track, visitors take to the roads with a local guide explaining the culture and customs of the community. The group will meander past local shebeens (pubs) and butcheries grilling meat alongside the street, with the opportunity to sample local delicacies such as sheep's head and home brewed beer. Visitors stop at the Lookout Hill and climb to the top of the panoramic viewpoint. The group will then visit an informal settlement comprised of tin shack dwellings, with the opportunity of meeting members of the community and playing with their children.
