Damaraland, to the west of Etosha, is one of our favourite areas of Namibia. Its innate beauty is intensified by the solitude and the sense of freedom it inspires. Huge, untamed and rugged, Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of vast panoramas and spectacular rock formations. It offers great photographic opportunities with imposing granite domes, dramatic flat-topped mountains and open plains. The attraction is the peace and solitude rather than teeming herds of game.
However you may be lucky enough to encounter some of the desert-dwelling elephant, the rare black rhino and other game that migrates across Damaraland according to the rains. However there are also herds of gemsbok, springbok, kudu (in the eastern parts), steenbok, mountain zebra and giraffe in the area.
A visit to the fascinating rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, a prehistoric art gallery, and the fossilized tree trunks of the Petrified Forest, are equally absorbing. En route south, you will also see the imposing Spitzkoppe and the Brandberg mountains.
