Resting on the River Gambia in the Pays Bassari hills, Kedougou is a town in the Kedougou Region of south-eastern Senegal, close to the border with Mali and Guinea. Meaning ‘Land of Man’, the easy-going but growing town boasts gorgeous natural scenery; an attractive selection of accommodation; and decent facilities such as good internet connectivity, a library and several small businesses. Highlights include the spectacular 100-metre-high Dindefelo Falls, surrounded by strikingly straight layers of rock, and the UNESCO-listed Niokolo-Koba National Park, a Biosphere World Heritage Site where visitors can spot antelope, baboons, warthogs, and possibly even lions. Make sure to visit the wonderful local markets to find fabrics and crafts which are unique to the village. Kedougou is ideally located for serving as a base to explore the surrounding region.
