The Château de Fontainebleau is not just one monarch’s palace, it belonged to all the kings of France and was passed down from generation to generation from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Set on over 130 hectares of gardens and spanning 800 years of history, it holds close to 30,000 works of art from the 16th to the 19th century. Within the palace itself, the works can be admired in the historic apartments, the Napoleon I Museum, the Paintings Gallery or even the Furniture Gallery. A large part of the collections at the Château de Fontainebleau consists of antique furnishings, with the museum also holding numerous artworks such as paintings, sculptures, graphic art and architectural items linked to the history of the palace.
