Situated close to the Zimbabwe border in the Limpopo River Basin, Venda is now officially part of Limpopo Province, but has a long and colourful history as an entity of its own. For centuries, it was recognised as the territory of the Venda people, who rebuffed attacks by other local tribes and Afrikaans ‘Voortrekkers’, and was later made an ‘African homeland’ during the rule of the Apartheid government. Today, the region is still defined by its strong Venda culture and heritage, as well as its magical landscapes of lush mountains and ethereal indigenous forests. Don’t miss a visit to Lake Fundudzi, considered a sacred place by the locals, or to Thathe Vondo Forest, with its diverse birdlife and other forest species.
