The capital of the Camargue, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, is an interesting destination rich in tradition, natural attractions, and heritage sites. Located in southern France on the Mediterranean Sea, the town boasts no less than four beautiful, long beaches, each with lovely golden sands and fantastic swimming conditions, as well as numerous restaurants, cafes and bars, making it a great summer holiday spot. However, the town’s cultural festivities are what many people come for; culminating in the Pelerinage des Gitans, a procession carried out since ancient times, in which Gypsies pay homage to Saint Sarah. The age-old folklore and music of these people are still celebrated in the town today throughout the year in various ways. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is also famous for its Camargue specialities: make sure to try the bull stew (‘gardiane’) and clam (‘telline’).
