Morukuru Beach Lodge is a luxury 5-suite boutique style eco-lodge in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, approximately 1 km from the exclusive-use Morukuru Ocean House, along the same pristine coastline. Part of Relais & Chateaux, the lodge offers one Honeymoon Suite, two Ocean View Suites and two Ocean View Family Suites, making this a great stopover location for couples or smaller families travelling along the Garden Route.
From the lodge it is just a short walk down to the beach and during whale season (July-October) this is arguable the best location for land based whale watching in Africa. Other activities on offer include mountain-biking, fynbos walks, marine walks, snorkeling and swimming at low tide in protected rock pools, sand-boarding and nature drives.
Morukuru Beach Lodge is off the grid completely, with electricity generated by solar panels. For the odd longer cloudy periods a backup generator may be used. All meals, drinks and 2 guided activities (shared with the other guests) are included in the daily rate.
Driving time from Cape Town or Knysna is approximately 3,5 hours. Private charter flights from Cape Town to De Hoop Nature Reserve are also possible, this flight takes approximately 50 minutes.

The De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of the best place in Africa for land based whale watching. During the winter month (July - October) large numbers of Southern Righ whales enter the sheltered bay of this Marine Protected Reserve to give birth to their calves. Thanks to the location of Morukuru Beach Lodge so close to the beach it is possible to see the whales from your room already.
The amazing white sand dunes of the De Hoop Nature Reserve offer excellent opportunities for sand boarding.
The pristine coastline of the De Hoop Nature Reserve is protected by the Marine Reserve, which means no boating and no fishing is allowed. It is also not allowed to remove anything from the beaches. As a result the beaches and coastline offer a lot to discover during fascinating marine walks during low tide.
The De Hoop Nature Reserve is located just to the east of Cape Agulhas, which means that water temperatures are a few degrees warmer then Cape Town and Hermanus. The protected rock pools with shallow water warm up even further, making it possible to swim and snorkel safely.
Morukuru Beach Lodge is surrounded by Fynbos and sand dunes. Go and explore this fascinating landscape on foot and discover the many different plant species. Did you know this is one of the richest floral kingdoms in the world, with over 3000 different species?
Guests at Morukuru Beach Lodge can discover the beauty of De Hoop Nature Reserve on mountain bikes as well. We offer bikes in various sizes, even for younger children. Guests can explore the reserve on their own, or as a guided activity together with other guests.
Join our guide on a nature drive exploring the western area of the reserve, focussing on the typical Fynbos vegetation. With a bit of luck you may spot Eland, Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Baboons and Ostrich, as well as other bird species. We sometimes visit the Vlei as well, where you may see flamingos and pelicans.
Morukuru Beach Lodge offers both indoor and outdoor dining options. The large dining room on the ground floor overlooks the sunken fire pit in front, as well as the impressive white sand dunes and the Indian Ocean. The sheltered courtyard offers further outdoor seating options.
Launched in February 2023, Bites Beach Café in the historical white cottage at Koppie Alleen down at the beach in front of Morukuru Beach Lodge is open to all guests (including day visitors in De Hoop Nature Reserve) between 10AM and 4PM daily. The kitchen closes at 3PM.
Guests can enjoy drinks and casual beach style food including pizzas, salads, burgers and fish. In the evenings Bites Beach Café is used exclusively for Morukuru Family De Hoop guests with special African themed dinner nights for guests at Morukuru Beach Lodge or Morukuru Ocean House.
