Located at the northern side of Mallorca, roughly six kilometres inland of the port, Pollença is a bewitchingly atmospheric town, characterised by golden stone houses, picturesque lanes, and a striking former nunnery, the crowning Santuari de la Mare de Déu des Puig which dates back to the 14th-century. This sacred site is best reached via a challenging but beautiful hour-long hike through the oak and pine trees along the hill. Another steep journey leads past cypress trees to the 18th-century Cavalri Church and Chapel. The impressive Església de la Mare de Déu dels Àngels, watching over the town square and featuring an elaborate altarpiece, is another must-see. To unwind, find Puerto de Pollensa, an extensive sandy beach with a beautiful promenade close to countless bars, restaurants and shops.
