Kinabatangan River sustains one of the world's richest ecosystems.
Other than being home to Borneo's indigenous orang utan and proboscis monkey, the surrounding forest is also one of only two known places in the world where 10 species of primates are found. All the eight species of hornbill found in Borneo make the area their home.
An impressive landmark on the map of Malaysian Borneo, Kinabatanagan River meanders for 560 kilometres from its source in southwestern Sabah to its mouth at the Sulu Sea. A boat cruise down the river is the best way to explore the region’s rainforests, lakes and abundant wildlife, with both day trips and overnight safaris offered. Regularly sighted wildlife includes proboscis monkeys, orangutans, crocodiles, macaques hornbills, owls, civets and if you’re lucky – the endangered Borneo pygmy elephant.
