Cuicocha Crater Lagoon is located in the Cordillera Occidental of the Ecuadorian Andes, at the foot of Cotacachi Volcano. This lagoon is 3 kilometres wide, and its name translates to the lake of guinea pigs as it resembles the shape of one. It was derived from the Kichwa indigenous language. This caldera lake was created after a massive eruption occurred about 3100 years ago and covered the surrounding area by volcanic ash.
