Set on Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, Crescent Island Game Sanctuary lies on a peninsula shaped like a crescent, its shores edged by acacia woodland and open grassland. The water’s edge attracts fish eagles and cormorants, while giraffe, zebra, impala and wildebeest graze freely across the 0.6 km² reserve, unconfined by fences and safe to approach on foot. Because there are no large predators, visitors explore with a guide, walking quietly through short savannah grass as Mount Longonot rises in the distance. Boat transfers from the mainland pass pods of hippos and waterbirds before reaching the shore. Once on land, photography and birdwatching unfold naturally during steady hikes, with clear views across the Rift Valley completing the circuit.
