With the exception of Gan, which forms part of Addu Atoll, the southern Maldives are far less developed than the northern and central islands due to their isolation from the capital, Male – in fact, most were virtually unexplored until only a few years ago. This makes them a fantastic diversion from the beaten track and a great escape crowds – but with the addition of a modern international airport, tourism is set to rise. For now, they are still an idyllic mix of pristine white beaches fringing lush rainforest and sparkling turquoise waters hiding living reefs. The diving is phenomenal and there are good waves to be had, particularly between February and April. Liveaboard surf and diving safaris can be chartered to the region’s remotest breaks and reefs, and are a fantastic way to experience its kaleidoscopic riches.
