The Montagu Pass is the second of the four passes built in this valley. After being approved by Hon. John Montagu in 1844, convict labour was used to create the pass, and it was opened to the public three years later, but the official opening only occurred in January 1948. Before the pass, it took three full days to get over the tortuous Cradock Pass. The pass made it possible to do this within three hours. Today, it takes 15 minutes or less.
