Located in west-central Jordan, the town of Al-Karak serves as the capital city of the Karak Governorate. Located along the ancient King's Highway, the town is set just 24 kilometres east of the Dead Sea, a wonder of nature and a world-renowned tourist destination. The town itself provides a great base from which to explore the scenic landscapes and attractions in the surrounding area. Al-Karak is best known as the home of the Crusader castle, the Kerak Castle. This ancient castle is one of the three largest castles in the region. Built in the 1140s by the Franks, the Crusaders called it ‘Crac des Moabites’ or ‘Karak in Moab’ and is a notable example of Crusader architecture featuring a combination of west European, Byzantine, and Arab design.
