Located roughly ten kilometres from San Cristobal de las Casas in the Mexican state of Chiapas, San Juan Chamula is a traditional village of the fiercely independent Chamulans, a Tzotzil group. The town is known for its people’s interesting religious practises. One of the main attractions here is the bright turquoise two hundred-year-old Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, one of the most significant sacred places in the country. Inside, a glowing other world awaits: covered in candles, the walls are lined with statues of saints, decorated by the locals’ numerous offerings of food, clothes and mirrors; the floors are covered with pine needles. Combining Christian and Mayan beliefs, the fervent traditional ceremonies are known to be moving. Other highlights include the lively weekly market, held every Sunday.
