Scenic flight of Lake Natron, include sunset and sunrise flights for a great photographic and adventurous experience. Flights vary from 30min to 1.5hrs at a time, where you will be buckled into a 2 seater plane, departing and arriving at the airstrip in Lake Natron. You will witness the largest of the Great Rift Valley’s soda lakes and the most caustic lake in the world from an aerial perspective.

The lake is shallow, no more than 3 meters deep and lying at 610m above sea level it also gets extremely warm. Water temperatures regularly reach 40C (60C recorded), combined with a pH of 9 -10, it’s surprising that life can actually flourish.

Yet, mineral rich springs along the edges of the lake grow algae that feed and provide shelter for abundant specialized fish and lesser flamingos. Invisible moisture supports Acacia tortilis woodlands that feed giraffe, while sheltered spots provide enough grazing for zebra, wildebeest, and Grant’s gazelle and Fringe-eared oryx. To the south of Natron lies Oldonyo Lengai - the stark Maasai “Mountain of God” that rises off the windswept and barren plains, flanked by brittle volcanic mudflows. It’s last eruption in 2007 sent plumes of ash 30,000ft into the air.

Your scenic flight will pass over Oldonyo Lengai, following the woodland escarpment, along the east side of the lake and back over the lake for a super sighting of Flaming nests. For an extended flight, you can visit Empakai Crater for more incredible sightings.
