Axim is a coastal town in Southern Ghana that was established by Portuguese settlers in the 16th century. You can still see the legacy of its founders in Fort Santo Antonio - a seaside citadel that dates to 1515 and is one of the oldest forts in the country. An itinerary must is the watery wilderness of Amansuri, the largest virgin wetland complex in Ghana and a brilliant bird watching site. On Lake Amansuri you can experience traditional local life in the stilted village of Nzulezo, with its timber and raffia houses. Also worth a visit is beautiful Bobowasi Island, a lush island with a lighthouse located roughly two kilometres offshore.
