Groote Post is a family wine farm an hours drive from Cape Town up the West Coast just outside the town of Darling. Peter and Nick Pentz were 3rd and 4th generation dairy farmers before selling their dairy herd in favour of wine production. The old VOC fort on the farm was restored in the late nineties to house the wine cellar, which saw its maiden vintage in 1999.
The 107ha of vineyard plantings are all on the south-facing upper slopes of the Kapokberg and surrounding hills, overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean. The deep clay rich soils and the cooling maritime influence create world class growing conditions ideally suited to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir production.
The historic Groote Post farm presents a rustic and rural atmosphere with undulating hills, vast open spaces and warm country hospitality.
The restaurant on the property, Hilda’s Kitchen, is named after Hildagonda Duckitt who became world-renown in the late 1800’s for her recipe books, most well-known of which was “Hilda’s Where is It of Cape Recipes”. Other attractions on the farm include farm drives to see the antelope and vineyards as well as picnics and nature walks.
Being part of the famous West Coast spring flower route and a member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, Groote Post also holds much appeal for environmentalists.
