The Bete Amanuel is part of the 11 rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia, and is the most finely carved church in Lalibela, cut from a free-standing monolith. The church has recessed and projecting walls that mimicks alternating layers of wood and stone, and the most striking feature of its interior is the double Aksumite frieze above the nave. A hole in the floor in the Southwest corner leads to a subterranean tunnel connecting it to Beta Merkorios. The chambers in the walls house the graves of pilgrims who requested it as their burial place.
