The Super Pit, officially named the Fimiston Open Pit is the second-largest open-cut gold mine in Australia, surpassed only by the Newmont Boddington gold mine. The Super Pit is located along the Golden Mile off the Goldfields Highway, just south-east of Kalgoorlie. The oblong-shaped pit is so large that it can be seen from outer space. It is approximately 3.5 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide and 570 meters deep. Tours are offered where visitors can view the mining and milling operations from the safety of an air-conditioned mine-bus.
