Kratie is a quiet riverside town on the Mekong River in eastern Cambodia, best known as one of the best places in the country to look for the rare Irrawaddy dolphin. It has a gentle, unhurried feel, with a broad riverfront, old shophouses, local markets and lovely sunset views over the Mekong.

The main reason to visit is the dolphin-watching area near Kampi, a short drive north of town. Small local boats take visitors out onto the river, where the dolphins can sometimes be seen surfacing in the deep pools. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the experience is peaceful and low-key, with wide river views and a strong sense of place.

Kratie is also a rewarding base for seeing rural Cambodian life. Koh Trong, an island in the Mekong opposite town, is particularly enjoyable by bicycle or tuk-tuk. The island has sandy lanes, fruit orchards, wooden homes, small temples and a slow village rhythm that feels far removed from the main tourist trail.

The town itself is simple rather than polished, but it has real charm. Late afternoon is the best time to wander the riverfront, try a local café, or watch the sun drop behind the water while fishing boats move slowly home.

Kratie works well as part of an overland journey through eastern Cambodia, especially for travellers continuing towards Mondulkiri or travelling between Phnom Penh and the Laos border. It suits those who enjoy wildlife, river scenery and quieter places where the appeal is found in small, memorable moments rather than major sights.
