On the eastern shore of Mauritius, Belle Mare stretches along a wide beach edged by casuarina trees and a shallow lagoon that shifts from pale blue to deep turquoise with the changing light. Mornings are especially calm, with gentle trade winds, glassy water and fishermen moving quietly along the coast before the day warms. The offshore reef shelters excellent conditions for snorkelling, paddleboarding and boat excursions across the Indian Ocean, while nearby villages offer small cafés and traditional Creole dishes away from the larger resorts. Although several luxury hotels occupy the beachfront, Belle Mare remains notably quieter than Mauritius’ busier west coast. Its appeal lies in the open shoreline, warm sea air and the gentle pace of daily life along Mauritius’ quieter east coast.
