Ashia is a world-class Fair Trade Tourism certified cheetah sanctuary and working farm outside Paarl in South Africa’s Western Cape, a 45 minute drive from Cape Town. An African name meaning ‘life and hope’, Ashia lies nestled at the foot of the dramatic Drakenstein mountains, providing the perfect setting for the sanctuary’s conservation and environmental education programmes.
Founded to help prevent the further decline of the cheetah population, Ashia's conservation efforts primarily focus on the wilding and introduction of captive-bred cheetahs into the protected wild.
Ashia also offers the opportunity to contribute in aiding conservation initiatives through its volunteer programmes, working holidays and research/ internship programmes.
Luxurious accommodation offers guests the opportunity to experience farm life first-hand. Guests and day visitors alike can refresh and eat at the Café with its sweeping views over the Drakenstein mountains, browse through the extensive selection of high end gifts and memorabilia in the Boutique Shop, or explore the beauty and diversity of the farm on foot.

Volunteering involves:
Cleaning enclosures and refilling water bowls
Preparing and feeding food to the animals - they are carnivores, so this does involve handling raw meat!
Educating the public by assisting with tours and taking guided tours once you have completed a mock tour with a staff member
Assisting with maintenance and other group activities
Planning and helping with animal enrichment (walks, treats, toys, etc.)
Babysitting the younger animals when required
For our local volunteers who wish to return, a typical day is similar to that of our international volunteers, and is outlined under ‘volunteer information’. However, we are flexible with our local volunteers, and understand the need to schedule their volunteering around work and/or studies. You will usually join in with our international volunteers in completing daily cleaning, feeding, group activities and other tasks. However, if you have any specific skills that could be useful on the farm, we will always go with your strength.
Cheetah Experience Ashia offers internships in many disciplines. These include animal care/ management, conservation, tourism, landscaping and sustainability. Students will be mentored and supervised by our experienced staff. If you are currently studying in one of these areas and need to complete a practical placement or internship, we have opportunities available.
This is a unique opportunity to experience the cheetah's daily life! We welcome international and local visitors. This is perfect for young people who have a yearning for a career with animals or for anyone who wants more of a behind-the-scenes experience.
